New Pages Up

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I finally got around to writing about A.A. Zimmerman, the first World Champion – check it out.

I also added a page dedicated to friends of Oy Velo. So far, all the links are sites Oy Velo enjoys. However, Oy Velo can be bought for the price of a Segal Bike, Jersey or manual labor (my house and car could use a cleaning). Contact Oy Velo if you would like me to link-in your organization.

He’Brew Beer Tasting

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

hebrew_logo.jpg

Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting with Darren Quinlan, the Southeastern sales representative for Shmaltz Brewing Company, which brews He’Brew Beer and Coney Island Lager. Quinlan is a beer snob who left the world of corporate finance to pursue his passion for good beer, leading him to Shmaltz. We met at The Independent, a bar in St. Petersburg, Florida, which serves The Rejewvenator on tap. The Independent received an overall A rating from Beer Advocate.

Unlike bicycles, about which I can speak extensively and with precision, my rudimentary beer pallet enables me to issue critiques such as “gross, I’ll have another;” “it’s okay, I’ll have another;” and “that’s really good, I’ll have another.” At The Independent, I had a few Rejewvenators and tasted some Coney Island Lager. Without question, both beers fall into the “that’s really good, I’ll have another” category.

I will write more about the beer later, and hopefully interview Jeremy Cowan, the founder of He’Brew. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with some quotes from the Shmaltz website, www.shmaltz.com

“The Chosen Beer: Perfect for Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings and Circumcisions”

“Christ That’s a Good Beer.”

One of the photographs on the site is Jeremy Cowan and Gary Coleman, with the caption, “What Jew Talkin’ About Shmaltz?”

Bush on a Segal

Finally, some publicity for Segal Bikes. Unfortunately, it’s a mountain bike rather than a road bike, and the celebrity on it has a 30% approval rating. It could be worse, Paris Hilton could be on the bike.

Oy Velo would like to get a different celebrity on a Segal.

Based on name alone, Steven Seagal would be perfect, if he wouldn’t mind removing the extra “a” from his last name.

Robin Williams would be good too, as he’s a longtime cycling enthusiast.

Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey, my second favorite tv doctor ever, has also recently taken a liking to road riding. I will personally deliver a Segal bike to you Dr. Shepherd.

Any other ideas?

Increase in jersey cost becomes effective Sunday

Above is the final version of the front and back of the jersey. Hope you enjoy it.

As to the price: apparently, Paypal takes a percentage of the proceeds in exchange for their services. In hindsight, this makes sense. Also, with increasing gas prices, I seem to have underestimated the cost of shipping. As a result, I am actually losing money on this venture. That would be stupid, so I have to increase the cost of the jersey from $65 to $70. I will also add a dollar for shipping (from $5 to $6 – unless you plan to pick it up locally).

These changes will not take place until Monday. Therefore, if you are attentive and check this blog regularly, you can still get the jersey for the cheaper price.

Sorry for the price increase. The jersey price will not change again unless I lose my job or something.

Segal’s Welding

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I have received a few questions/comments about the welds on the Segal Bikes. My favorite being, “how about a side of bike with my welds?” In response, I’d like to assure everyone that the welds are perfectly normal for magnesium. Aesthetically, the welds aren’t quite as smooth as other materials, but functionally, the bike is perfect! It’s light, responsive and durable, not to mention damn good looking. Below is an excerpt from Cyclingnews.com regarding the Pinarello Dogma, another high-end magnesium frame. The entire article is complimentary, with this caveat:

The frame, aesthetically speaking, is one of those things that you either love or hate. Personally I love it. The only criticism I would have – and this is me being really picky here – is with the welds. I like my bikes to have nice, smooth lines and it was a bit disappointing to find The Dogma FP’s welds were left as they’d come from the torch. However, building a larger weld that could then be filed smooth would add weight to the frame, which is why it hasn’t been done.

Pro: Beautiful, stiff, responsive
Con: Not much!

The moral of the story is: stop being superficial and buy a Segal.

Also, cheer for Leah Goldstein this week as she attempts to win her fourth Mt. Hood Stage Race.

Segal Bikes US has it’s own site

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

By popular demand, I finally made a website for Segal Bikes. www.segalbikesus.com or www.segalbikes.us

The website includes information about magnesium as well as details about Segal’s geometry and specifications.
