I have received a few questions/comments about the welds on the Segal Bikes. My favorite being, “how about a side of bike with my welds?” In response, I’d like to assure everyone that the welds are perfectly normal for magnesium. Aesthetically, the welds aren’t quite as smooth as other materials, but functionally, the bike is perfect! It’s light, responsive and durable, not to mention damn good looking. Below is an excerpt from Cyclingnews.com regarding the Pinarello Dogma, another high-end magnesium frame. The entire article is complimentary, with this caveat:
The frame, aesthetically speaking, is one of those things that you either love or hate. Personally I love it. The only criticism I would have – and this is me being really picky here – is with the welds. I like my bikes to have nice, smooth lines and it was a bit disappointing to find The Dogma FP’s welds were left as they’d come from the torch. However, building a larger weld that could then be filed smooth would add weight to the frame, which is why it hasn’t been done.
Pro: Beautiful, stiff, responsive
Con: Not much!
The moral of the story is: stop being superficial and buy a Segal.
